These Tales of the Isle of Wight begin with the story of Yarmouth, the first town and port to be built on the Island during the years of the 12th century. All the major places of interest are explored and their histories recounted, including the George Hotel, the eighteenth century Town Hall, the Bugle Hotel, St James’ Church and the old Tide Mill.

The book continues with an account of a Royal Princess who lived on the Island: Cecily, second daughter of Edward IV. After being betrothed to James III of Scotland when she was five, fearing for her life and being forced into hiding by her uncle Richard III at the age of fourteen, and then marrying a man twice her age at seventeen (who died twelve years later), Cecily finally settled down to be the ‘wife of a typical country gentleman’, Sir Richard Keene who lived on the Isle of Wight.

The reader then learns about a slightly eccentric Governor who was a special friend of William Shakespeare; a man of arms who fought at the Battle of Agincourt in 1414; and other stories covering a variety of interesting and curious events.  The late CWR (Roy) Winter was one of the Island's most prolific authors and this book is one of his best.
