An Inspired Treasury of Verse admirably describes the latest work by Lynn New in her Treasury series. This volume includes some moving, humorous, sentimental and life-encouraging poetry, richly illustrated by her in full colour. It warms the eye and the heart and once again we see the unique talent of this much appreciated author and artist.
Clearly much of Lynn's inspiration comes from people she has known, with poems entitled ‘A Very Special Niece’, ‘Generation Gap’, ‘The Older Man’, ‘Nephew Defined’ and ‘Dear Daughter-in-Law’.
Lynn's regular readers will know that her faith is one of her main inspirations and this is clear from the poems ‘Bringer of Comfort’ and ‘A Quiet Place’. The former is written in the first person with God as the narrative voice and says to the reader that He “shall” bring them comfort if they simply give themselves to Him.
“Everybody needs a quiet place” begins the poem of the same name which suggests that this is the best place to be with God, to “recall words that Jesus taught”.
Within this collection is plenty of personal reflection from Lynn, with titles like ‘Proud to be Me’, ‘Snippets of Thought’ and ‘Confusion’ written in the first person to express this more effectively. The use of the plural “we” gives the reader a sense of connection in poems such as ‘Positive Thinking’ and ‘Shattered Dream’. Both these poems recommend that we avoid dwelling on the negative, that we shouldn’t be as hard on ourselves as we are; failure is inevitable and is just part of human nature. If we treat it in a positive light we can learn from it and become stronger.
There are thirty-five calligraphic poems in this collection, each one carefully illustrated by the poet in full colour to complement and enhance the text, and each one truly inspired.
