John Bingeman is a chartered marine engineer, and along with his wife Jane has an extensive knowledge of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic. In 1979 he spent five weeks on the Island with a Joint Services Expedition studying the marine environment. In 1991 and 1992 John was invited back to supervise RAF Recreational Diving and Jane accompanied him. From 1999 to 2002 inclusive and again in 2005 they returned to the Island as tourists spending over a month each time.
On his retirement from the Royal Navy, John and Jane built up a Marine Services business which included operating the Government licence to excavate the Royal Navy’s first Invincible (1758) in English waters. He has written reports on aspects of the 18th century wreck for various publications including the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. Their holidays in Ascension have centred on snorkelling up to two hours a day, studying, identifying and photographing the Island’s inshore sea life.
