“I try to draw attention to that which is not always the most popular or the most obvious. Art for me is about using colour, line and form to convey a feeling. I want someone to look at a piece and feel a stir of recognition, an unspoken memory of the way that person felt in a rare moment of oneness with nature.”
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Peter Hall has been a major presence in South African art galleries for the past fifteen years. Starting out as a water-colourist, he soon acquired a reputation as one of the country’s best, being represented by leading galleries and sought after for teaching courses and demonstrations.
He evolved from there, experimenting with mixed media and oils, constantly drawing on his foundation experience as a water-colourist to create the light and vibrant colour that has become his trademark.
Peter’s frequent and extensive journeying in search of fresh, visual inspiration, are punctuated by intense spells in the studio, where he translates the images that have captivated him into emotive paintings. In each piece, he sets out to capture the essential quality that defines an area – be it the translucent light and tranquillity of an African bush scene, or the raw, savage beauty of the Antarctic.
Peter is also an internationally awarded photographer who works on polar voyages as a Photographic Guide for leading adventure travel company, Aurora Expeditions.
Through his art and photography, Peter hopes to promote a greater appreciation of our unspoiled natural areas, as it is only by loving and appreciating nature that humanity will learn to value and conserve it.
“People today spend so much time searching for “answers”, for that intangible something that will make us whole. Stop searching. Go alone into nature. Sit quietly and let the layers of stress and ego fall away. In the heart of the wilderness, we can find peace and our own true humanity.”
