Island Author

Brian was born in Cowes and educated on the Isle of Wight.  At the age of 15 he joined the Army as a boy soldier.  During a long and happy career Brian married Angie and they and their family saw the world.  Brian retired from the Army in 1992, having reached the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major.  After so long in the forces, it was a natural step to join the Prison Service at home on the Isle of Wight. Brian's interest in history led him to membership of the Parkhurst Heritage Group, from which it became apparent that there was plenty of material to make a book about this fascinating establishment.  The result was Behind the Small Wooden Door, his first book.

Brian's other interests are fresh water match fishing and metal detecting.  The Isle of Wight provides plenty of opportunities for both!

Ask anyone to name a prison and they will probably say 'Parkhurst'. This book tells in a very human and informal way the fascinating, long and interesting history of this, the Isle of Wight's most famous jail.
