John Medland was brought up on the Isle of Wight from the age of six.  He studied history and economics at the University of Wales before a career with the United Association of Wales and related organisations in Paris. 

In 1985 he published his first local history, Shipwrecks of the Wight, followed by in 1995 Alum Bay and the Needles. He has been the editor of the West Wight Beacon and latterly  Isle of Wight Beacon magazines.

John is now pursuing a career as a local historian, lecturing on Island history at the Isle of Wight College and giving talks to interested groups.  He is also working on a new edition of Alum Bay and the Needles and a new book on Island History.
