John Bain was an expert boat designer during the early to mid part of the twentieth century and worked for the famous James A Silver Boat Yard.
John Bain’s success as a boat designer first came in 1927 when he won first prize in a designing competition organised by Yacht Sales and Charters for a 14 ton motor sailer. In 1932 and again in 1935 he took leading positions in designing competitions run by Yachting World, and in 1945 he scored a signal success with his design for "The Pleasure Cruiser of Tomorrow."
It was around this time that he decided to write ‘Motor Yacht Building’ - a comprehensive guide to the established methods, tricks of the trade materials used in the art of boat building during the 1930s.
John Bain left Silvers in 1957 but he continued to design yachts for several other yards. The company ceased trading in 1971. John Bain died on April 29th 1980, when he was 91 years old.
