Island Author

Ron Winter lived on the Isle of Wight for twenty-one years and had many books published about the history of this rather special place. He and his wife Pat, a photographer, soon realised that the Island is not only rich in natural beauty but also in history, and they spent many happy years exploring the highways and by-ways, recording and writing about their discoveries, hoping to share their enjoyment with others. Ron has achieved this aim by passing onto the reader this enthusiasm for the Island, and Pat’s pictures affectionately convey her own love of the Island Scene.

Ron Winter first discovered the Isle of Wight in 1936 when he was serving as an Engineering Officer in RMS Queen Mary, and he never forgot it. After innumerable visits it was inevitable that the Island ultimately became his retirement home. He soon became absorbed in the Isle of Wight’s long history and its great natural beauty, and ‘Traveller’s Joy’ is his fifth book extolling the virtues of this very special place.

In his classic book Colourful Characters of the Isle of Wight the late Roy Winter describes a few of the many men and women who over the centuries have, in one way or another, contributed to the history of the Island or influenced its character. They range from the beginning of the 17th century to the present day – the one thing they have in common being individuality and a certain eccentricity of character.

These Tales of the Isle of Wight begin with the story of Yarmouth, the first town and port to be built on the Island during the early years of the 12th century. They continue with an account of a Royal Princess who lived on the Island; a slightly eccentric Governor who was a special friend of William Shakespeare; a man of arms who fought at the Battle of Agincourt in 1414; and other stories covering a variety of interesting and curious events.
